Rock Properties

Understanding the need for well stimulation requires a brief discussion of the rock properties porosity and permeability.

Porosity is pore space between grains where gas and fluid is stored.  Sand grains are brown, gas and  fluid are blue.

Permeability is the pathway connecting pores that allow gas/fluid to move.  When drilling, these pathways can get blocked with drilling mud or fine grained silts.  A near wellbore stimulation or “mini frac” will restore the pathways and allow gas to flow as indicated by blue arrows.
